An exhibition of works on clay and paper by Susan McGilvrey
titled Art & Dishes: novelties and greatest hits runs
Monday, July 23 through Thursday, August 30, with a reception for the artist on
Saturday afternoon, August 18 from 1.00 to 4:00 p.m.
The juxtaposition of artforms
brought together in this exhibition — from large painterly pots to
drawings to functional bowls, cups and trays— allows the artist to ask
the viewer: ÒIs bigger and brighter better? Is a drawing of a bowl more
artful than an well-made and well-proportioned actual container for corn chips? If we can discuss a
piece at length, is that piece superior to one that simply feels good in the
hand?Ó
The works in this exhibition range
from pots to pictures of pots to pots that are (pretty much) three-dimensional
pictures, sampling more than a decade of her life and work. McGilvrey, who
received an M.F.A. from The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, moved to
Omaha shortly after as an artist-in-residence at the Old Market Craftsman's
Gallery and Creighton University.
Susan McGilvrey has exhibited widely in local, regional, and national venues, in both solo and group shows, and this year was awarded a second Individual Artist Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council. She maintains an active engagement with local and regional artists and teaches drawing and design foundations, ceramics, life drawing, and watercolor at UNO and Metropolitan Community College.
