Gladys Haunton grew up in a small college town on the eastern edge of Nebraska. She and her husband Jeff reared their son in Omaha, where they now maintain their empty nest. As often as possible, they escape to their plot of pasture land and wooded ravines in Iowa. There they count among their neighbors a great-horned owl, barred owl, merlin, red fox, and this autumn a white-tail stage with a magnificent rack of antlers. Gladys spent the early years of her career teaching adult education courses for Omaha Public Schools in such venues as church basements, community centers, drug treatment facility, and psychiatric hospital. After earning a late-in-life Ph.D., she taught English at Creighton University, Iowa Western Community College, and Methodist College. Her creative non-fiction essays have appeared in Concho River Review, Fourth Genre, Hunger Mountain, Plains Song Review, South Dakota Review, and turnrow.
