David Helm received his BA in Anthropology from Ithaca College in 1981 and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1983. Since the 80s, Helm has exhibited large scale installations at museums and galleries in NYC, Brooklyn, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Chicago.

His sculpture, Plant Life, one of five large-scale sculptures commissioned through the Bemis Center project “Art for Omaha” was installed on the Qwest Center grounds in 2006. Helm has had a distinguished teaching career, holding positions at Wake Forest University and the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is currently a professor and chair of the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
