Michael Neary began art studies as a printmaker at Montgomery College in Maryland and at the Art Institute of Chicago. When he became interested in painting, he moved to Kansas City to attend the Art Institute there, receiving a BFA degree in 1975. He earned the MFA degree from Indiana University in 1982. Michael has earned a living as a commercial sign painter and pictorial billboard artist. More recently, he has taught art history and art appreciation classes in the Indiana State Prisons. For the last five years, Michael has become involved in exploring the possible meanings of trying to paint what one sees. His partnership with Amy MacLennan began in 2000, through their involvement in a figure drawing co-op. Her recent employment as a college professor has allowed him to paint full time for the past year, a gift for which he is extremely grateful.
