Jan uses basic earth-based substances like milk, eggs, animal glues, soil, and plant dyes to create paintings that peel, crack, and discolor - revealing the paint, and the substrates we slather paint over, to be living earthly stuff. Jan received his BFA from the University of Delaware and an MFA from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He also completed a year of training in traditional draftsmanship at the Academy of Classical Design (Southern Pines, NC). Jan has exhibited in New York, Delaware, North Carolina, Kentucky, Vermont, and Hawaiʻi, and been an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT), Wildacres Residency Program (Little Switzerland, NC), and Safan Ranch (Fiddletown, CA). He currently teaches at Honolulu Community College, Kapiʻolani Community College, and the Honolulu Museum of Art School. Jan maintains his studio practice in the Mānoa Valley of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi.
