Melanie Mowinski founded PRESS: Letterpress as a Public Art Project, a hybrid gallery, teaching, and studio space centered around an operating Vandercook Universal III in 2011. PRESS anchored Main Street, North Adams for five years, and served as a downtown hub for students from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where Mowinski is an Associate Professor of Art. Mowinski embraces measurement and precision in the letterpress process as well as going rogue and making crazy lock-ups with super powerful magnets. She approaches book making in the same way-balancing hyper control & very specific rules with experimental investigations. She gravitates towards one-of-a-kind books housed in unusual and traditional enclosures. Her books are in private and public collections like the Crouch Library at Baylor University, The Free Library of Philadelphia, The Ruth Hughes Collection at Oberlin College, Tate Modern Museum of Art in London, and the Love Library at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
