Stephen Lewis (b. 1983) is a composer and concert pianist currently living in San Diego. As a composer, Stephen's works examine time as a human phenomenon through a deep engagement with received tradition, the latent possibility of material and form, and compelling, if unconventional, narrative. His wide-ranging catalogue of works, including solo, chamber, and orchestral works, have been performed throughout the United States. Stephen has been commissioned by the Wellesley Composers Conference, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Madison-based Downbeat Means Attack, and Duo Diagenesis, as well as by numerous individual performers. Stephen did his undergraduate degrees in Composition and Piano Performance at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he studied with Lewis Nielson and Randolph Coleman. He is currently pursuing the PhD in Composition and the DMA in Contemporary Piano Performance at UC-San Diego, where he has studied composition with Rand Steiger, Roger Reynolds, and Chinary Ung.
