Cassia Kite Receives "Excellence in Fibers Award"

Friday, February 1, 2019

KHN Alumni (2018) Cassia Kite has received the 2018 Paul J. Smith Award for Excellence in Fibers, and is featured in the current issue of Fiber Art Network Magazine!

In viewing the impressive range of work accepted for Fiber Art Now, I selected the innovative installation KANEKO Soundstitching by Cassia Kite for this year's award. Her very original creation that combines textile craft skills with musical composition, creating music scores resulting in a performance is, in my opinion, a pioneering new concept. For me, fiber artists who successfully explore new work that bridges textile art with other disciplines can offer an important focus that deserves to be honored. —Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus of the American Craft Museum (now Museum of Arts & Design, NYC)

Excellence in Fibers IV Selected Works 2018-2019, including Soundstitching works by Cassia Kite, will be shown at the Craft in America Center, Los Angeles, CA: May 11-July 6, 2019.

Cassia Kite is an interdisciplinary artist who created Soundstitching, a multimedia project that transforms color from a hand-stitched image into a musical composition that can be interpreted by a musician and/or performance artist. She is now adding full-size quilts and larger fiber art pieces to accompany this body of work.

Congratulations, Cassia Kite!
