John Schuerman announces opening of "The Other Four"

The Plains Art Museum is currently presenting The Other Four, a exhibition curated by KHN Alum (2018) John Schuerman.

The artwork is primarily experienced through senses other than vision. "With rare exceptions, art objects are created to be experienced through our sense of sight. The Other Four is an exhibition that relies primarily on the non-visual senses -touch, hearing, scent and taste. Through contemporary art, it brings our attention to these four, typically back-staged, senses, to open up a realm of experience that is often overshadowed by our visual programming. In this exhibition you will be able to Touch the other side of the world, listen to conversations in the walls of the museum, smell the essence of ‘About Last Night’, and use your own creative skills to describe the associations of flavor sensed on your tongue in a taste and smell survey.

This landmark exhibition captures the spirit of regionally-based avant-garde artists who are experimenting and producing nonvisual and/or multi-sensory art. Artists include David Andree, Pedram Baldari, David Bowen, Kate Casanova, Irve Dell, Wendy Fernstrum, Nima Hafeziah, Alison Hiltner, Nooshin Hakim Javadi, Yevgeniya Kaganovich, Aida Shahghasemi, Ken Steinbach, and Liza Sylvestre." Breaking Bread: Plains staff will be baking and slicing up freshly baked bread the last Thursday of the month, June – November. Patrons are invited to "enjoy a piece of bread, stimulate your sense of taste and smell. Continue this sensory experience inside the exhibition The Other Four." (plainsart.org)

Opening night of the event featured the performance piece, "Eyes Should Be Washed," by artists Pedram Baldari, Katayoun Amjadi, and Nooshin Hakim Javadi. "In 'Eyes Should Be Washed,' performers grate many, many onions in front of the audience. This act, through the smell of the onions, brings tears to stimulated eyes in order to wash/clean them. The work is a dialogue with Iranian Poet Sohrab Sepehri, whose poems call for change in perception to find peace within self. In some cultures, especially Iranian culture, crying is considered as an act of soul cleansing and is practiced through religious rituals." (plainsart.org)

The staff is engaged but is also very conscious of respecting the time and space of each resident. Nebraska City has excellent institutions but still provides a quiet and slow-paced setting. The space and set up were great! This is one of my favorite residencies thus far. The location of the apartment wasn't too far from civilization but also in a good area for it not to be super noisy nor was there lots of traffic or other sounds. The middle school across the street wasn't at all a distraction. I also really loved the dessert spots and greatly appreciated the staff's flexibility and availability to help, answer questions, drive you to the store when needed. All the details were thought of right down to a bathroom mat and miscellaneous supplies available in its own closet.
