Johannes Barfield is an American visual and sound artist working across installation, video, extended reality, collage, and experimental music. His practice explores memory, cultural restitution, joy, and extinction, often blending layered visuals with immersive sonic environments built from original compositions, samples, and field recordings. Originally from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he earned his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and is now based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he teaches art and humanities in the Honors College at the University of New Mexico. Barfield’s work has been exhibited at the Nasher Museum of Art, Davidson College, Mint Museum, and the Greenville Museum of Art. He is currently developing Pilot Coaltrain, a speculative science-fiction project exploring portals, repatriation, and the slow death of the sun. The project unfolds through abstract painting, collage, and sound. Barfield is a recipient of fellowships and residencies from MASS MoCA, the Fine Arts Work Center, and Lighthouse Works.
