He spent many years making short-form documentary and commercial work around the world, which led to directing his feature-length documentary debut, Born This Way (2013), a verité exploration of the gay and lesbian underground in Cameroon. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and went on to screen at over 90 festivals and to receive many honors, including the grand jury award for best documentary at Outfest. During an artist residency at Yaddo in 2016, Shaun developed a documentary on teenagers in the foster care system, which is scheduled for completion in 2019. Shaun grew up between small towns in Alabama and California and now lives in Los Angeles.
