Blake Allen Announces Release of SONATAS

Sunday, May 10, 2020

KHN Alum (2020) and composer, Blake Allen, has announced the release of his album, SONATAS, "in commemoration of the 50th Earth Day and to celebrate Mother Earth." SONATAS features music based on the deep sea, and is now available on all streaming platforms including Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, and available for physical purchase. Sheet music is also available for purchase.

"The album features Grammy Nominee, Christopher Koelzer, the radiant Emily Uematsu on violin, and the alluring Susan Mandel on cello. The wonderful album artwork is by Bee Betley, who lives in Philadelphia. L'abîme ou poèmes pour violin et piano (2016) premiered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The programmatic music describes the sensation of splashing into the ocean as you go on a journey, slowly sinking to the ocean floor, through seaweed, vast emptiness, bioluminescence, the sea vents, and ultimately hitting and sliding down the Abyssal Plain. This sonata is heavily inspired by Planet Earth, Ocean Deep. Music for Kelly features music that was written for the horror play Kelly [1955]. Each movement is named after a female character in the play, and all the sound effects are created by messing around with extended techniques inside of the grand piano and on the cello. (The Steinway at Moon Recording is from the early 1900s and still has its ivory keys, which causes the most thrilling, tinny echo-vibrato when the string are plucked.)"
