Gary Eldon Peter Debuts Short Story Collection "Oranges"

Gary Eldon Peter (KHN Alumni, 2017) has announced the publication of Oranges, his debut short story collection, just released from publisher New Rivers Press.

Oranges won the 2016 New Rivers Press Many Voices Project competition in prose, and was a finalist for the 2015 Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction.

"The book features a collection of linked short stories about the life of Michael, a gay man from the Midwest who must find his own confusing path to adulthood after personal loss. In addition to the loss of his partner, Michael is confronted with a number of challenges, including coming to terms with his sexuality in the age of AIDS, facing his family’s difficulties accepting him, and dealing with the death of his mother and the aging of his father." Gary Eldon Peter’s short stories have appeared in Callisto, Water~Stone Review, Great River Review, and other publications. In addition to being a writer, he is a professor at University of Minnesota.

The interdisciplinary structure is really beneficial and generates unique conversations while providing mutual inspiration for residents. The staff is engaged but is also very conscious of respecting the time and space of each resident. Nebraska City has excellent institutions but still provides a quiet and slow-paced setting. The space and set up were great! This is one of my favorite residencies thus far. The location of the apartment wasn't too far from civilization but also in a good area for it not to be super noisy nor was there lots of traffic or other sounds. The middle school across the street wasn't at all a distraction. I also really loved the dessert spots and greatly appreciated the staff's flexibility and availability to help, answer questions, drive you to the store when needed. All the details were thought of right down to a bathroom mat and miscellaneous supplies available in its own closet.
